New Samsø Potatoes

Growers plant the first potatoes as soon as the frost has left the ground, some years in late February. The first potatoes are planted in pots, before they are moved to the fields. The young plants are covered with plastic because of the risk of frost. Later the plastic is replaced with fibre net for easier irrigation, and in late April or early May the first new outdoor potatoes can be lifted.

Some varieties are ready earlier than the varieties chosen by the growers at Samsø Grønt. But the taste is not satisfactory. These years the most popular varieties are Solist, Arielle, Friesländer, and Agata. New varieties are added all the time.

Green Beans

Fresh beans are delivered every day during the harvest period. This requires a grower with a very unusual attitude, as he must see to that he is able to harvest beans every day. This means that beans are sown twice a week to make sure that there are always beans with the right size. The beans are sorted and packed at Samsø Grønt.

Gourmet Potatoes

Besides baking potatoes and ordinary potatoes, Samsø Grønt has a wide range of gourmet potatoes to satisfy every taste. In collaboration with our growers we develop new varieties that are tested on taste each year. Samsø Grønt washes, sorts and packs gourmet potatoes that are sold in cardboard trays and little bags. Among our gourmet potatoes you will find choice varieties such as Ampere, Elizabeth and Linzer Delikatesse, but also our barbecue potatoes are regarded as a gourmet product by consumers.

Brussels Sprouts

Six different varieties are grown, which are harvested at different times. The new varieties do not - unlike the old varieties - need frost before they can be eaten, and it has indeed extended the season considerably. Samsø Grønt sorts and packs the Brussels sprouts.

Baking Potatoes

The demand for baking potatoes is increasing, and Samsø Grønt is able to market them as soon as they have the right size up until the warehouses are emptied during winter. The variety Estima is used, but each year new varieties are sampled to possibly find an even better fit baking potato. The potatoes are screened and packed by weight so that customers get a consistent size every time. Samsø Grønt specifically goes for a good baking potato and not just for a big potato.

Celery

There are many new celery varieties on the market, which are probably better suited to modern Danish taste. The flavour of the celery has become a little more gentle and mild, which means that it can be used in more dishes. The different varieties are also ready for harvesting at different times which extends the season considerably. Celery is cleaned and packed by growers.

Hamburg Parsley

New varieties have been introduced, meaning more uniform and easier-to-cultivate roots. Hamburg parsley is used in soups, grated in salads or as accompaniment to meat dishes. This root resembles a white carrot, but the top smells like parsley. Hamburg parsley is washed, graded and packed at Samsø Grønt.

Hokkaido

Our tasty hokkaido-pumpkins can be used in soups, baked in the oven and as accompaniment to other delicious dishes. Samsø Grønt screens and packs hokkaido from late September until early January. Some growers sow hokkaido as their first crop; these hokkaidos are ready at the beginning of the season. Other growers sow hokkaido as the second crop and deliver hokkaido later in the season. This way our hokkaidos are fresh all season.

Jerusalem Artichokes

Over the years new varieties have been introduced to the market. These varieties distinguish themselves by not being as angular as previous varieties. This means that a smaller part of these delicious vegetables is lost when getting them ready for cooking.

Jerusalem artichokes are preferably supplied directly from the ground since they are very hard to keep in stock. This means that Jerusalem artichokes are to be grown on light soils, where the harvester can run regardless of weather conditions. Light frost does not have an impact on the harvesting, which can only be stopped by severe frost or very large amounts of snow.
